LA QUINTA, Calif. (UCFAthletics.com) - Behind a strong performance from senior David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla.), the UCF men's golf team is tied for fourth after two rounds of play at The Prestige at PGA WEST. The Knights (598, +22) are tied with No. 25 Pepperdine at the 16-team event.
Johnson (143, -1) finished Monday third in the individual standings. He is one of two Knights currently in the top 15.
Play at the three-round, two-day event at the Greg Norman Course opened Monday. The final 18 holes are set for Tuesday. UCF posted a 15-over 303 in the first round and concluded the day with a seven-over 295.
After carding a four-over 72 to begin the event, Johnson recorded a five-under 67 in the second round. Junior Simon Ward (County Monaghan, Ireland) is tied for 14th at 149 (+5). He totaled a one-under 71 in the second round.
TCU leads the field at 583 (+7), followed by tournament hosts UC Davis (586, +10) and 12th-ranked Stanford (589, +13).
Competing in his first tournament of the fall, junior Mike Stern (Miami, Fla.) is tied for 47th with a five-over 149. Senior Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla.) is one stroke behind Stern and tied for 54th (156, +12). Redshirt freshman Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla.) is tied for 69th (159, +15).
Last season, the Knights finished third at the event. Johnson tied for sixth in the individual standings at 213 (-3).
Nate Pistachio of UC Davis tops the individual standings at 139 (-5).
