ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF's Sean Johnson has been named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon. The sophomore shares the award with UAB's Carl Woszczynski while Paulo da Silva of SMU took Offensive Player of the Week honors.
A Lilburn, Ga., native, Johnson wins the award for the first time in what is becoming a standout career with the Knights. The 6'4" keeper made six saves in helping UCF to a 1-0 victory over Stetson on Sunday, the Knights' first win of the season. The shutout was Johnson's first of the season and third of his career.
"Sean continues to keep us in games defensively with his exceptional play, and it is nice to see the league office recognize his strong efforts," second-year head coach Bryan Cunningham said. "His play through the first three games is indicative of his hard work in the offseason and the strides he has made since his freshman year."
Through the opening three games of the 2008 season, Johnson has tallied a league-high 22 saves and posted a 1.26 goals against average. He also leads the league in saves per game (7.33) and is tied for first in save percentage (.846).
Having played the first three games of a season-opening five-game road trip, UCF returns to action this weekend with two games in the Old Dominion STIHL Soccer Classic in Norfolk, Va. The Knights play on 4:30 p.m. on Friday against William & Mary before facing the host Monarchs Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
