ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF volleyball team will host its first alumni weekend Oct. 3-5 at The Venue at UCF, highlighted by the dropping of the 1978 AIAW National Championship banner Friday night during the match vs. C-USA-foe Marshall.
UCF's 1978 volleyball team, coached by Lucy McDaniel, won the AIAW National Championship after going undefeated with a 55-0 record on the season. The Knights posted a 39-0 record during the regular season, before breezing through the State Championship Tournament and the Southern Regional Tournament with nine-straight victories. The Black and Gold hosted the AIAW National Championship in Orlando, Fla., impressing the home crowd with five-consecutive match sweeps and a pair of nailbiters over Hawaii-Hilo to claim the National crown. Karin Fischer, Sharon Koskey, Laura Smith and Celestin Wilson were all named All-Americans following the season.
Following Friday's banner-dropping ceremony, the Knights will host an alumni match Saturday morning at The Venue beginning 10 a.m. with fans welcome to attend the event free of charge. Following the alumni luncheon at noon, fans are welcome to stick around and watch the Knights practice from 1:30-3 p.m.
The three-day event will conclude Sunday with UCF's match versus East Carolina at 1 p.m. During the intermission between sets two and three, all alumni will be recognized at center court for their accomplishments, contributions and loyalty to the UCF volleyball program.
The Knights' volleyball squad made five-consecutive trips to the AIAW Small College Championship from 1977-81 and seven trips to the NCAA Tournament from 1994-2003. UCF has a record of 789-489 in its 33-year history, a .617 mark.
