GAINESVILLE, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's tennis team concluded its first event of the fall season Sunday, and it earned some impressive results from a player competing in her first collegiate tournament. Freshman Andrea Yacaman (Cartagena, Colombia) went 4-0 at the Gator Fall Classic to win the Flight B singles crown, while three other Knights earned victories on the third and final day.
"Overall I'm happy with the weekend. I think that our players learned a lot from playing against a high level of competition for three days in a row," said head coach Stephanie Nickitas. "After we talked at the end of Saturday's matches, they responded well and turned things around today. And Andrea had a great weekend in singles. Obviously winning her first tournament is a great accomplishment. I'm really proud of her. She has great focus and determination in her matches and that showed in her results."
Yacaman needed straight sets to topple Kentucky's Jennifer Stone, 6-3, 7-6(3), and ensure a perfect record for the weekend. Also shining for the Black and Gold, sophomore Jenny Frisell (Gothenburg, Sweden) went the distance in a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0(10-6) triumph over Kentucky's Carolina Escamilla in the Flight A backdraw.
Over in Flight B, sophomore Isa Ohlinger (Zweibrucken, Germany) stunned Florida's Jo Mather with a 0-6, 6-2, 1-0(10-6) come-from-behind win. Freshman Alexis Rodriguez (Boca Raton, Fla.) needed less time to wrap up her victory, defeating USF's Allyn Mueller, 6-3, 6-4.
The Knights will enjoy some time off before they return to the courts for the Rollins College C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational Oct. 10-12.
