C-USA Selects UCF's George as its Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

Sept. 2, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Helping the No. 29 UCF women's soccer team to a 2-1-0 record to begin the 2008 season, junior Yvonne George (Winter Springs, Fla.) was tabbed as the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week the league office announced Tuesday. The Knights played a pair of top-20 programs last week, and George had a role in both of the game-winners.

After the Knights fell to No. 4 Florida State Aug. 25, 5-0, they had another in-state road contest when the Black and Gold traveled to No. 19 Florida Aug. 29. Both teams were scoreless through the first 83 minutes until George took a pass from freshman Stacie Hubbard (Jacksonville, Fla.) and drilled a 12-yard shot past keeper Katie Fraine. That goal proved to be the difference as the Knights moved to 2-1-1 in their last four matches vs. UF.

Two days later, UCF and Hartford were deadlocked with time winding down in the Knights' home-opener. Eventually George found herself with possession to the right of the net, escaped the Hartford defense and sent a perfect ball into the box. It trickled over to junior Becca Thomas (Burlington, Wash.) and she capitalized by ripping it easily past Lauren Brodeur with five minutes remaining for another 1-0 victory.

George now has nine goals, four game-winners and six assists in a UCF uniform. The C-USA weekly honor was her third of her career.

UCF will hit the road this weekend, heading to California to battle Pacific Friday at 10 p.m. ET and UC Davis Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.

Following the trip out West, the Knights will host Illinois State Sept. 12, Illinois Sept. 14 and Kansas Sept. 19. Illinois is currently ranked as high as No. 11 in the country, while Kansas sits at No. 20.
