GAINESVILLE, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - In a tournament that features three top-25 programs from last season, the UCF women's tennis team concluded day one of the Florida Gator Fall Classic Friday. Freshman Andrea Yacaman (Cartagena, Colombia) picked up two victories in the Flight B draw to reach Saturday's semifinals.
"The ladies went out there and competed on a high level against some of the top teams in the country," said head coach Stephanie Nickitas. "That's what I asked them to do. We might have taken some losses, but I'm very happy since we've only had a few weeks of practice. They put themselves in position to win a lot of matches and some of the results could have gone either way."
Yacaman opened her collegiate career by edging Kentucky's Lauren Meier 6-2, 2-6, 1-0(10-8), then took down Allyn Mueller of USF, 6-2, 6-1. Yacaman will now play USF's Jessica Sweeting Saturday at 8 a.m. in the semis.
UCF had three student-athletes in the Flight A bracket, but all three drew players ranked in the top 70 in the country. Sophomore Jenny Frisell came the closest to pulling off an upset, falling to No. 67 Marrit Boonstra of Florida, 6-4, 6-4.
All seven Knights participating this weekend will be back in action Saturday on day two of the event, which comes to a close Sunday.
