OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's golf team began play at the Olympia Fields Illini Invitational Friday and the Knights are tied for eighth after one round at the Olympia Fields North Course. UCF seniors Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla.) and David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla.) are tied for 14th in the individual standings.
Eight of the top-30 squads in the country are competing at the tournament.
The Knights opened the three-day, three-round event by posting a 296 (+16). The squad is tied with ninth-ranked Arizona State. UCF and the Sun Devils trail the fifth-place team, second-ranked Oklahoma State, by five strokes.
No. 3 UCLA and No. 21 Duke are tied for tenth, one stroke behind the Knights.
Forest and Johnson both carded two-over 72s Friday. Joseph Bramlett of Stanford and Alex Martin are tied for first (68, -2).
UCF redshirt freshman Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla.) is tied for 41st after posting a five-over 75. Junior Simon Ward (County Monagahn, Ireland) is tied for 56th (77, +7) and freshman Blayne Barber (Lake City, Fla.) is tied for 63rd at 9-over 79.
No. 18 Indiana and host Illinois are atop the team leaderboard at 288 (+8).
The Knights began the 2008-09 campaign last weekend, competing at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Illinois.
