Sept. 15, 2008
ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - With the 2008 presidential election less than two months away, UCF student-athletes are getting involved in the political process by participating in a voter registration drive. Representatives from UCF's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee are working to register student-athletes to vote by Sept. 22.
As part of the drive, two representatives from each UCF varsity program, plus the cheer and dance squads, are responsible for getting their fellow team members registered on the Rock the Vote web site.
Members of the SAAC executive board, including co-presidents Jenny Heppert (Volleyball) and Samantha Sarff (rowing), are overseeing the drive. Committee members serve as liaisons between student-athletes and the athletics association and work on community service initiatives.
The voter registration drive is endorsed by UCF director of athletics Keith R. Tribble and senior associate athletics director for student services Jessica Reo. The initiative is supported by UCF's CHAMPS/Life Skills Program.
"We want our student-athletes to exercise their rights and make sure their voice is heard. Being part of the political process is something that we should not take for granted," Tribble said. "The SAAC has taken the leadership role in making sure that all of our student-athletes are registered to vote."
The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
