Freshman Leads Knights at Season-Opening Event

ROCKY FACE, Ga. (UCFAthletics.com) - Competing in his first collegiate event, freshman Blayne Barber (Lake City, Fla.) of the UCF men's golf team tied for 10th as the Knights concluded play at the Carpet Capital Collegiate Sunday. UCF (889, +25) placed 14th at the tournament at the Farm Golf Club.

The three-round, three-day event included 13 of the top-30 squads in the country.

Barber carded a one-over 73 Sunday to finish at 216 (E). He began the tournament with a four-under 68, and followed that with a three-over 75. He recorded 11 birdies during the event.

Clemson's Kyle Stanley (208, -8) claimed medalist honors. Three players tied for seventh, one stroke ahead of Barber.

The tournament served as the first of the 2008-09 campaign for the Knights. Last season, UCF won two events and competed in the NCAA West Regional.

The Knights finished ahead of three top-30 teams: No. 24 UAB, No. 26 North Carolina and No. 28 Mississippi State. Chattanooga won the team title at 864 (E).

UCF senior David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla.) recorded a two-over 74 Sunday and tied for 49th (224, +8). The tournament also served as the first collegiate event for redshirt freshman Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla.). On Sunday, he posted a four-over 76 to finish tied for 56th at 225 (+9).

Senior Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla.) and junior Nico Donaldson (Windermere, Fla.) tied for 78th (231, +15).

The Knights will return to action Friday, opening play at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational in Illinois.
