ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Before donning a Black and Gold women's tennis uniform in 2008-09, UCF's four newcomers are getting a taste of the Division I level by competing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Summer Circuit. Freshmen Andrea Yacaman (Cartagena, Colombia) and Christy Core (Charlotte, N.C.) both represented the Knights by climbing all of the way to the doubles finals at Florida State and UNC Greensboro, respectively.
Yacaman went a combined 6-2 in singles and doubles in Tallahassee July 8-10. She collected a pair of singles victories, while also pairing with Jamie Mera from Missouri en route to four-straight wins and a berth in the doubles final.
A native of Colombia, Yacaman then joined her fellow three UCF newcomers at the University of Florida July 12-15. She posted a 1-1 mark in the singles draw, and teamed up with freshman Alexis Rodriguez (Boca Raton, Fla.) as the duo advanced to the semifinals in doubles action. Junior Katie Orletsky and Core, meanwhile, reached the tournament's doubles quarterfinals, with Core earning two triumphs in the singles bracket.
Core was back on the courts in her home state of North Carolina for the final two events in the Southeast region. After grabbing two singles wins at the UNC July 19-21, she moved on to UNC Greensboro July 25-28 where she went 1-1 in singles. But on the doubles side, Core was impressive. She partnered with Tennessee's Natalia Pluskota and the combo secured four victories before falling in the finals to the top seed of the event.
Core, Orletsky, Rodriguez and Yacaman are all set to begin their UCF careers this fall as the Knights are slated to begin the 2008-09 season Sept. 19. The full schedule will be released at a later date.
