ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF junior Mike Stern (Miami, Fla./Killian) recorded a strong showing at one of the nation's top events, finishing second Sunday at the 36th Rice Planters Amateur Golf Tournament in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Stern concluded the four-day event at 272 (-16), one stroke behind tournament champion Matt Griffin.
The Rice Planters Amateur, held at the Snee Farm Country Club, annually brings together some of the best national and international golfers. Players like Tom Lehman, Davis Love III, Hall Sutton and Stewart Cink have competed at the event in past years.
After carding a 65 in the third round, Stern fired a 69 in the final round. Griffin entered the final round with a one-shot edge over Stern and also posted a 69 on the final 18.
During the 2007-08 campaign, Stern competed in eight events and helped the Knights land a spot in the NCAA West Regional. He posted a pair of top-10 finishes, including a share of medalist honors at the UCF Rio Pinar Invitational in Orlando in February.
UCF sophomore Kyle Cobb (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) also competed at the event in South Carolina.
