ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Second-year UCF head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert announced the Knights' 2009 indoor track and field schedule Monday and the slate includes several challenging events. UCF will open the indoor season on Jan. 16 at the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington.

Ten events are listed on the schedule, including the Conference USA Championships in Houston (Feb. 27-28). UCF will participate in six events in the southeast, highlighted by meets in Gainesville, Fla. (Feb. 7) and Fayetteville, Ark. (Feb. 13-14).

"Our schedule is designed to prepare us for the Conference USA Championships, where the goal is place in the top three," said Smith Gilbert. "During the schedule, I expect our student-athletes to strive for personal best times. The goal is to qualify for the national championship and come home with All-America honors."

The NCAA Championships are slated for March 13-14 in College Station, Texas.

After opening the season in Kentucky, the Knights will head to State College, Pa., for the Penn State National (Jan. 30-31). The slate in February includes events in Chapel Hill, N.C., Blacksburg, Va., and Clemson, S.C.

Under Smith Gilbert's direction, UCF had a strong indoor season in 2008. Lizzie Harris became the first NCAA Indoor Championships participant in program history when she garnered All-America honors in the high jump.

The Knights received four All-C-USA Indoor honors at the league championship. During the campaign, 12 indoor school records were broken.
