FORMOSA, Argentina (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF freshman guard Isaac Sosa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) averaged 13.8 points this week as Puerto Rico competed in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship. Sosa totaled 19 points and six rebounds Friday as Puerto Rico fell to Canada, 83-68, in the tournament's bronze medal game.
Sosa's squad played five contests at the event and he scored at least 15 points on three occasions. For the tournament, he shot 51 percent from the floor and also averaged 3.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.2 steals.
Puerto Rico began the eight-team, five-day tournament on Monday. After posting a 2-1 mark in group play, Puerto Rico qualified for the FIBA Americas U19 Championship next summer.
The 6-foot-3 Sosa attended Grandview Prep in Boca Raton and was a Florida Class 1A All-State First-Team pick as a senior. He averaged 19.5 points, 6.5 assists and 6.0 boards in 2007-08.
Sosa helped lead Grandview Prep to the state finals, but did not play in his team's last two games due to an injury. In addition to earning all-state honors, he was named the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's 3A-2A-1A Player of the Year and the small schools player of the year by the Palm Beach Post.
Last summer, Sosa helped Puerto Rico qualify for the event in Argentina. He averaged 11.8 points in five contests as Puerto Rico claimed the Centrobasket U17 Championship.
Sosa will join the Knights in August.
Season tickets for the Knights' 2008-09 campaign at the new UCF Arena are slated to go on sale later in July.
