AURORA, Colo. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF senior golfer David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla./Melbourne) concluded a successful stint at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship Friday. The tournament began with 156 golfers and Johnson was one of the final four competitors in action as he advanced to the semifinals.
Friday morning, he defeated Kyle Leach, 5 and 4, to advance to the semifinals. In his semifinal match, Johnson fell 4 and 3 to John Chin.
The tournament began Monday. On Saturday, Chin will meet Jack Newman for the title.
Johnson was competing at the U.S. Amateur Public Links for the third time. In his previous two appearances, he missed the cut for match play. This year, he advanced to match with a 1-over-143.
The U.S. Amateur Public Links is one of 13 championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association. The tournament was created to serve as a championship for golfers who play on public courses. Members of private clubs are not allowed to participate.
Johnson competed in all 12 of the Knights' events in 2007-08. He helped UCF earn a trip to the NCAA West Regional. The Brevard Community College transfer garnered Conference USA Newcomer of the Year honors and also earned a spot on the league's all-conference first team.
