July 17, 2008

AURORA, Colo. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF senior David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla./Melbourne) won a pair of matches Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of U.S. Amateur Public Links at the Murphy Creek Golf Course. Johnson will face Kyle Leach on Friday morning for a spot in the semifinals.

Johnson began Thursday by topping Jon McLean, 1 up. In the round of 16, he defeated Andy Winnings, 3 and 2.

The championship match is set for Saturday. The tournament began with 156 players. Johnson is now one of eight golfers still in action.

Johnson is competing at the U.S. Amateur Public Links for the third time. In his previous two appearances, he missed the cut for match play. This year, he advanced to match with a 1-over-143.

The U.S. Amateur Public Links is one of 13 championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association. The tournament was created to serve as a championship for golfers who play on public courses. Members of private clubs are not allowed to participate.

During the 2007-08 campaign, Johnson competed in all 12 of the Knights' events. The Brevard Community College transfer garnered Conference USA Newcomer of the Year honors and also earned a spot on the league's all-conference first team.
