June 26, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF senior David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla./Melbourne) qualified this week for the 2008 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Johnson, who helped the Knights earn a spot in the NCAA West Regional this past season, will now compete at the United States Golf Association sponsored event in Aurora, Colo., starting July 14.

Competing at the Bloomingdale Golfers Club in Valrico, Fla., Johnson posted a 67 first round score and a 72 in the second round to qualify for the public links championship.

The event is one of 10 individual amateur championships organized by the USGA. The tournament was created to serve as a championship for golfers who play on public courses. Members of private clubs are not allowed to participate.

This past weekend, Johnson tied for third at the Florida State Amateur Championship. He was one of 168 golfers who participated in the four-day tournament.

During the 2007-08 campaign, Johnson competed in all 12 of the Knights' events. The Brevard Community College transfer garnered Conference USA Newcomer of the Year honors and also earned a spot on the league's all-conference first team.
