ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Brittany Long (Atlanta/Therell High School), the Georgia state record-holder in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the University of Central Florida track & field team for the 2008-09 season, head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert announced Wednesday.
Long, the No. 2 ranked senior in the nation in both the 100 and 200-meter hurdles according to Track and Field News, is widely considered the state of Georgia's top recruit. She is a eight-time state champion, helping lead the Therell Panthers to the 2007 GHSA Class AAA team state title. She earned 2007 Gatorade State Track and Field Athlete of the Year honors.
Long won the 2008 Georgia state title in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes this past May at the state meet in Albany, Ga. She claimed the 2008 Nike Indoor National Championship in the 60-meter dash, ranking No. 1 in the nation in that event by Track and Field News.
Despite being wind-aided, Long's personal-best marks of 11.42 (100m) and 23.02 (200m) still remain as Georgia state records (all classifications).
Long has recorded back-to-back third-place finishes in the 100-meter dash at the Nike Outdoor Nationals and added a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash in the 2007 event.
