ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Courtney Locke, who played at the highest level as a student-athlete at Rutgers, and who has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Texas-San Antonio, has been named assistant coach for the UCF women's basketball team, head coach Joi Williams announced Tuesday.
Locke helped guide UTSA to its most successful season in school history in 2007-08, as the Roadrunners posted a 23-10 record, claimed their first-ever Southland Conference Tournament championship and made the first NCAA Tournament appearance in the 27-year history of the program. It was just the second 20-win season in school history for UTSA.
"I am very excited about the newest addition to our staff," Williams said. "Courtney has a tremendous passion for the game of basketball and is eager to share her knowledge with our players. Her experience as both a player and a coach will be very valuable to our program as we guide UCF to a championship level."
At UCF, Locke's responsibilities will include working with the perimeter players, and assisting with recruiting and scouting.
"I am so thrilled to have this opportunity at UCF," Locke said. "I am really looking forward to working with Coach [Joi] Williams and her staff, and am excited about her vision for this program. I am looking forward to helping the UCF women's basketball program make history."
Locke served as the Roadrunners' recruiting coordinator and camp director. She also was in charge of opponent scouting and the development of the team's perimeter players. Under her direction, junior guard Monica Gibbs was an All-Southland Conference first-team selection in 2008 and a second-team selection in 2007. Senior guard Terrie Davis was a third-team All-Southland Conference honoree in 2008.
Locke was a four-year letterwinner at Rutgers from 2002-06, playing in 126 games with 26 starts at the guard position under legendary head coach C. Vivian Stringer. During her playing days, the Scarlet Knights advanced to four NCAA Tournaments, making one Elite Eight appearance (2005) and two Sweet Sixteen appearances (2005 and 2006). Rutgers twice won the BIG EAST regular-season title with Locke on the squad, and the team's record during her collegiate career was a combined 97-32 (.752), including a 53-11 (.828) mark in league play.
Locke replaces Alysiah Bond, who accepted the position of Director of Basketball Operations at the University of Arizona.
