UCF's Sheree Carter Wins C-USA Heptathlon Title

May 16, 2008

EL PASO, Texas (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF junior Sheree Carter (Tallahassee, Fla.) became the first athlete in school history to win a Conference USA individual outdoor event championship on Friday when she captured the women's heptathlon at Kidd Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at El Paso.

Carter finished first in the heptathlon with 4,833 total points, the third-best heptathlon score in school history. That bests her previous best score in that event of 4,512, set in the 2007 season. Carter's first-place finish in the event scored 10 points for the team, which increases UCF's total to 12 points through three women's events at the 2008 Conference USA Championships.

Carter entered Friday's competition with a 255-point lead over SMU's Lauren Kuhner. On Thursday, she scored 3,118 points, winning three of four heptathlon events.

On Thursday, Carter finished first in the 100-meter hurdles and qualified for the NCAA East Regional in that event with a time of 13.88 (+1.1). She also finished first in the high jump (5-3/1.60m) and 200-meter dash (25.04, +2.2), while placing sixth in the shot put (31-6.50/9.61m). Her NCAA regional-qualifying time in the 100-meter hurdles marked the 11th NCAA regional-qualifying mark/time by the Knights this season, which is a school record for most regional qualifiers in a single season in school history.

Carter opened Friday's competition with a first-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 18-2.25/5.54m on her second attempt. That mark was recorded with a strong wind reading of +4.7 on a windy and rainy day at Kidd Stadium.

Carter finished eighth in the javelin throw with a toss of 64-5/19.64m on her first throw, but still held on to a narrow advantage with the 800-meter run serving as the determining event. Carter broke out to a quick lead in the 800-meter run, with a lane-one starting assignment. Running a gutsy race, she finished right behind the event's winner Brianna Steel of Tulsa, concluding the 800m in second place in a time of 2:27.76.

With the multi events concluded, Friday's remaining events commence at 7 p.m. EDT. The preliminaries of the running events and the finals of several field events take place Friday evening. A complete release detailing each of the day's results will be disseminated at that time.
