Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF senior defensive back Joe Burnett was one of five Conference USA players named to the 2008 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List as selected by the Football Writers Association of America. The Nagurski Trophy is awarded annually to the nation's top defensive player and has been a part of the FWAA's awards since 1993.
It is sponsored by the Charlotte Touchdown Club with the winner to be selected from the association's 11-man All-America defensive team in late November.
One of 56 players named to the list nationally, Burnett is a three-year starter who will enter his senior season ranked second on UCF's all-time interception list with 12, including a league-high six last season during the Knights run to the 2007 C-USA title. His 12 interceptions are also the second most by any active player in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision returning in 2008.
Burnett registered 64 tackles (55 solo) and posted a team-high 12 pass breakups with one fumble recovery. He has twice been named an All-Conference USA first-team performer (2005 and 2007) as a defensive back and three times as a punt returner.
