David Johnson Named C-USA Newcomer of the Year

April 22, 2008

TEXARKANA, Ark. (www.ucfathletics.com) - A pair of UCF players were recognized Tuesday when Conference USA announced its postseason men's golf honors. Junior David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla./Melbourne) garnered one of the league's top awards, receiving C-USA Newcomer of the Year honors.

Along with fellow junior Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla./Martin County), Johnson also earned a spot on the All-C-USA First Team.

Both players have helped the 19th-ranked Knights record one of the finest seasons in school history. The team has won two tournaments in 2007-08 and has recorded top-five finishes on five occasions.

Johnson, who is in his first campaign at UCF after transferring from Brevard Community College, has posted five top-10 showings for the Knights. The lone Knight to compete in all 11 of the team's events this year, he has 11 rounds of par or better. On April 14, Johnson helped the Knights record the team title at the UK Bluegrass Invitational in Lexington, Ky., tying for sixth.

Forest has four top-five finishes this season, including a victory at the UCF Rio Pinar Invitational in Orlando in February. He has participated in 10 of 11 tournaments for the Knights this season. In the fall, Forest placed third at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate Championship in Greensboro, N.C.

Both players garnered one C-USA Golfer of the Week award during the year. The league's 11 head coaches selected the award winners.

The Knights are in their third campaign in C-USA and Forest and Johnson are the first UCF golfers to garner all-conference recognition from the league. Forest has garnered league honors before as he was a 2005-06 C-USA All-Freshman Team selection.
