ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The No. 19 UCF men's golf team hopes to carry the momentum from its first-place finish last week at the UK Bluegrass Invitational into the Conference USA championship. The three-day event is scheduled to begin Sunday morning at the Texarkana Country Club in Texarkana, Ark.
The winner receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals. UCF and Marshall will be the first to tee off at 9 a.m. EST Sunday.
UCF is led by juniors Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) and David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla./Melbourne). Each is ranked among the top-65 college golfers nationally. Johnson has posted five top-10 showings in 2007-08, while Forest has achieved the feat on four occasions.
Senior Giwon Suh (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) led all UCF golfers with a 224 (+11) at last week's tournament. Suh's fifth-place finish was his second-consecutive top-five performance. He heads into the C-USA championship as the reigning C-USA Golfer of the Week.
In addition to Forest, Johnson and Suh, sophomore Mike Stern (Miami, Fla./Killian) and freshman Kyle Cobb (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) will be in action for the Knights at the event.
Stern has participated in six events for the squad this season, recording a pair of top-10 finishes. Cobb competed at the UCF Rio Pinar Invitational in February, tying for 12th.
This will be UCF's third C-USA Championship appearance. Suh was the squad's top performer last year, finishing 14th overall to lead the Knights to a sixth-place finish.
