ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Senior UCF sprinter/hurdler Victoria Chin (Orlando, Fla./Oak Ridge HS) has been named the Knights' Athlete of the Week for her impressive showing at the Miami Elite Invitational this past weekend in Coral Gables, Fla., as decided by the team's coaching staff on Tuesday.
Chin notched a personal-best and regional-qualifying time of 13.91 in the 100-meter hurdles before also notching a regional-qualifying time in the 400-meter hurdles with a 1:00.68. This marks the second consecutive season in which Chin has punched her ticket to the NCAA regionals in the 400-meter hurdles.
Chin also was a regional-qualifier as part of UCF's school-record-setting 4x400-meter relay, which finished in a time of 3:43.30. The relay consisted of Feyisara Adaramola (Bronx, N.Y.), Shantile Blackburn (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Dione Thomas (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Chin. They shattered the previous school-record time of 3:44.62 that was set in the 2006 campaign. Blackburn and Chin also were a part of that squad two years ago.
"I am pleased that Victoria Chin qualified for regionals in three different events this weekend," UCF head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert said. "It is great as a senior to go out in style and that's what she is setting herself up to do this season."
Following each week of competition, Smith Gilbert and her staff will nominate an athlete to be the school's track and field athlete of the week based on the previous weekend's meet. That athlete will then be eligible to be considered for the Conference USA Athlete of the Week award, announced each Tuesday afternoon by the C-USA office in Irving, Texas.
