ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF rowing program was very busy Saturday, as the Knights' openweights traveled to the Virginia Invitational and the No. 7 lightweight squad battled No. 1 Princeton on Lake Pickett. The varsity 8+ did pick up a victory over Columbia in Virginia, but suffered a second-place finish to Wisconsin on Lake Monticello.
UCF's second and final home regatta opened up with the top-ranked Tigers defeating the Knights in the lightweight 8+, 7:25.3 to 7:37.9. Although Princeton earned first, it witnessed UCF shave off about eight seconds compared to last year's meeting when the Tigers got past UCF by close to 20 seconds in New Jersey.
In the varsity 4+ vs. Princeton, UCF "A" cruised to the victory with a time of 8:56.5, with the "B" boat coming in third thanks to a time of 9:32.1.
All of the way up in Virginia, UCF's novice 8+ kicked off the morning session by taking down Oregon State by seven seconds. The second varsity 8+ also notched a win when it raced past Wisconsin by just five tenths of a second. However, the Badgers secured victories in the varsity 8+ and varsity 4+ events.
Capping of the afternoon, the Black and Gold novice 8+ again posted a first-place performance, completing its course in 7:00.6, 5.2 seconds ahead of Virginia's "A" boat. The varsity 8+, second varsity 8+ and varsity 4+ then posted impressive displays vs. Columbia as each nabbed wins. Both UCF's and Columbia's varsity 8+ entered Saturday receiving votes in the latest coaches poll.
The UCF openweights return to the water Sunday at the Virginia Invitational with the varsity 8+ battling No. 7 Michigan State.
