ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF men's soccer team plays host to the Friends of Soccer Weekend beginning Friday at the UCF Soccer Complex. As part of the festivities, the Knights play host to Warner Southern at 7 p.m. Friday and will also play the annual game at 11 a.m. Saturday. Admission to both spring matches is free and open to the public.
UCF's Friends of Soccer Weekend is an annual event in which the Knights welcome back all former players and coaches, parents of current and former athletes and anyone with a vested interest in the men's soccer program. In addition to the two matches, there will also be a wide variety of off-the-field events for participants to enjoy throughout the weekend, including a golf outing and pre-game tailgating.
"This weekend is an exciting opportunity for our current players to embrace the traditions set by the former great UCF soccer players and coaches," UCF head coach Bryan Cunningham said. "It will also be a good experience to welcome back our former players and let them see the growth of the UCF soccer program."
The Knights and Warner Southern meet for the first time in school history on Friday. The Royals, located in Lake Worth, Fla., are a NAIA member that competes in the Florida Sun Conference. The match-up also carries special significance for Warner Southern head coach Kirk Bienias, who is a graduate of UCF.
"We are looking forward to Friday's match, especially since they are coached by a UCF alum in Kirk Bienias," Cunningham said. "He is in the process of building a strong program at Warner Southern and we welcome the opportunity to face them in a spring match."
