Harris and Thomas Named UCF Track and Field Athletes of the Week

March 3, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Freshman Lizzie Harris (Miami, Fla.) - UCF's first-ever Conference USA Indoor Champion - and junior Dione Thomas (Jacksonville, Fla.) have been named the Knights' Co-Athletes of the Week, as decided by the team's coaching staff on Monday.

Harris became the first UCF track and field athlete in school history to win a Conference USA individual championship, finishing first in the high jump on Saturday with a leap of 5-10, which is just shy of her school-record jump of 5-10.75, set at the Frank Sevigne Invitational in early February. Harris scored 10 points in the high jump and added three points with a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter dash to become the team's top points scorer at the meet. She ranks 18th on the national high jump list, compiled to assist in the selection of at-large competitors for the upcoming NCAA Championships.

Thomas broke her own school record in the triple jump with a leap of 42-2, besting her previous record-setting mark of 41-4.50. She finished with six points in the triple jump and six points with a third-place finish in the long jump.

Following each week of competition, head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert and her staff will nominate an athlete to be the school's track and field athlete of the week based on the previous weekend's meet. That athlete will then be eligible to be considered for the Conference USA Athlete of the Week, announced each Tuesday afternoon by the C-USA office.
