March 21, 2008

AUSTIN, Texas (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF rowing varsity eight boat kicked off its 2008 spring season in impressive fashion Friday at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas. The Knights topped No. 19 Wisconsin by just over seven seconds on Lady Bird Lake, while the second varsity eight also picked up a win.

The action got underway at 5 p.m. for the Black and Gold with a slight headwind but overall good weather, and the Badgers barely defeated UCF in the novice eight race, posting a time of 7:31.0 while the Knights came in at 7:31.4. Wisconsin then won the first varsity four race, finishing the course in 7:57.0 compared to UCF's 8:17.1.

However, the Knights shined in the varsity 8+ events. The second V8 used a time of 7:04.8 for the win against UW (7:09.4), which set up a strong performance for the first varsity eight as it delivered a victory in its first test of the year, getting by the Badgers in 6:54.0. UW completed the event in 7:01.8.

The Knights continue the Longhorn Invitational Saturday and Sunday, while UCF also will be represented at the annual Petrakis Cup Saturday in Jacksonville.
