ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Coming off its strongest indoor campaign since joining Conference USA, the UCF track and field team opens its 2008 outdoor season this weekend when it travels to Coral Gables, Fla., to participate in the Hurricane Invitational. The two-day event, hosted by the University of Miami at the Cobb Track and Field Facility, begins Friday at 3 p.m. and continues Saturday at 11 a.m.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert, the Knights broke 13 school records during the indoor campaign, culminating in the first appearance by a UCF student-athlete (Lizzie Harris) at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Harris, a freshman from Miami who is making her inaugural return to her hometown, became the first track and field athlete in school history to earn All-America honors after finishing tied for ninth in the high jump at last week's NCAA Championships.
Participating teams at the Hurricane Invitational include: Albany, Bethune-Cookman College, Buffalo State, Case Western Reserve, Florida International, Florida Memorial, Furman, George Mason, Johnson and Wales, Marshall, North Dakota State, Nova Southeastern, Pittsburgh, Rhode Island, Rutgers, South Carolina State, UT-San Antonio, Virginia Tech and Warner Southern.
