ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - There will be plenty of action for the UCF rowing team this weekend. The Knights' top varsity and novice boats travel to Austin for the Longhorn Invitational Friday-Sunday, while the lightweight squad, as well as the second and third novice 8+, gets set to participate in the Petrakis Cup in Jacksonville.
UCF has competed in three regattas this season, all in Winter Park. However, this will mark the first action for the varsity 8+ boat, which was ranked as high as ninth in 2006-07.
This weekend will see UCF battle Wisconsin's No. 19 varsity eight to open the Longhorn Invite Friday night beginning at 5 p.m. It will then tangle with Iowa at 9:50 a.m. Saturday morning before meeting Kansas State that evening at 5:10 p.m. To wrap up the trip to Texas, the Knights get together with the host Longhorns at 8:50 a.m. Sunday.
Just up the road, Jacksonville will host the annual Petrakis Cup, with the Knights sending its first lightweight 8+ boat, as well as two varsity 4+ squads. The novice team also will represent the Black and Gold in Jacksonville. UCF is serving as the defending champion of the regatta after it hosted the event last year on Lake Pickett.
