Lizzie Harris named UCF Track and Field Athlete of the Week.

Feb. 4, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - For the second consecutive week, freshman Lizzie Harris (Miami, Fla.) has been named the UCF Track and Field Athlete of the Week, as decided by the team's coaching staff on Monday.

Harris notched the team's first NCAA provisional-qualifying mark this season and UCF's first NCAA indoor provisional mark since the 2002 campaign with a school-record leap of 5-10.75 in the high jump. She broke her own school record and freshman record in the event, besting the mark of 5-8.75 that she set a week prior at the Tom Jones Memorial Classic in Gainesville, Fla.

Harris also broke her own school and freshman indoor records in the 400-meter dash. She finished the event in a time of 55.18, which shattered her previous record-setting time of 56.36.

Since beginning her collegiate career this season, Harris has shattered school records in the 200 and 400-meter dashes and the high jump.

"I am really proud of Lizzie" UCF head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert said. "An NCAA provisional mark is a great accomplishment, especially for a freshman."

Following each week of competition, Smith Gilbert and her staff will nominate an athlete to be the school's track and field athlete of the week based on the previous weekend's meet. That athlete will then be eligible to be considered for the Conference USA Athlete of the Week, announced each Tuesday afternoon by the league office.
