Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Junior Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla.) and sophomore Mike Stern (Miami, Fla.) both equaled the UCF 18-hole record in round two of the UCF Rio Pinar Invitational with respective scores of eight-under 64 to vault the Knights into the lead after 36 holes of competition.
UCF, who was in third and trailing Ole Miss by seven strokes entering the second round, is six shots clear of Wichita State. The Shockers remained in second with a pair of consistent rounds, posting a 284 (-4) in the morning round to go with a 283 (-5) in the afternoon. The Rebels fell to third place (570, -6) after carding a 290 (+2) in round two.
Forest leads Stern in the race for medalist honors with a two-round total of 134 (-10). The junior had the Knights' top score in the morning round with a 70 (-2). Stern shot an even-par 72 to open his day, but birdied four of his last five holes in the afternoon to close with a two-round tally of 136 (-8). Memphis' Ian Rochester is only three strokes behind Forest after putting together rounds of 69 and 68 for a total of 137 (-7).
Ole Miss grabbed the first-round lead behind the strong play of freshman Jonathan Randolph. The Rebel rookie made seven birdies in his first 18 holes to post a score of 65. Randolph is in a five-way tie for sixth after posting a 75 (+3) in round two.
Stern and Forest join Barry Roof in the UCF record books. Roof fired his 64 at the Fall Beach Classic in 2003.
Juniors David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla.) and Preston Brown (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) each carded a 73 (+1) in round two to help the Knights post a team score of 274 (-14). The 18-hole team score in the afternoon round was the second lowest in school history. Brown opened play with a level par 72, while Johnson also carded a 73 (+1) in his opening round.
Senior Giwon Suh (Orlando, Fla.) also played for the Knights, registering a pair of 74's during his two rounds.
Freshman Kyle Cobb (Tallahassee, Fla.) posted a pair of 71's (-1) playing as an individual and is tied for 13th with a two-round total of 142 (-2). Cobb is tops among the three individuals in the field. Sophomore Nuno Henriques, who is also playing as an individual for UCF, posted a two-round score of 150 (+6).
