JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - It has been a week of revenge for the UCF women's tennis team, as the Knights traveled to Jacksonville University and defeated the Dolphins, 5-2, Saturday. With the victory, UCF improved to 4-4 on the 2008 season, while JU dropped to 3-3.
In 2007, UCF suffered a 5-2 loss to Jacksonville and was able to turn the tables this season. Meanwhile, on Feb. 20 the Knights posted a 6-1 win over North Florida after the Ospreys collected a 6-1 triumph over UCF last year.
"We came out really strong today and showed them that we are a different team this year. We really stepped it up and got it done," said senior Kyla McNicol. "I really don't think about myself and my personal record, I just think about the team and I know that if I push myself everyday, I will perform my best. That has been my goal, to just play my best to help this team win."
UCF picked up wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles position for the first overall point of the afternoon. McNicol teamed up with freshman Jenny Frisell for a convincing 8-1 win at No. 1 vs. Tatiana Soldatova and Iva Jaresova, and senior Jennifer Carati and junior Elvira Serrot secured the doubles point at No. 2 with a 9-8(3) victory over Lena Willi and Fernanda Carerro.
Four Knights locked up straight-set wins in singles action for the final 5-2 margin. Frisell cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 against Willi, and McNicol defeated Soldatova at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0. Over at No. 4, junior Kenza Belbacha notched a 6-0, 6-1 performance over Jaresova, and senior Anna Yakimchenkova was perfect in a 6-0, 6-0 display against Carrero at No. 5.
The Knights are back home Wednesday when they host USF at the UCF Tennis Complex at 2 p.m.
