CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF's Feyisara Adaramola (Bronx, N.Y.) and Victoria Chin (Orlando, Fla.) each broke school records on Saturday and numerous Knights set personal-best times and marks at the Dick Taylor Relays hosted by the University of North Carolina at the Eddie Smith Field House.
Adaramola shattered a six-year-old school record in the 60-meter dash with a personal-best time of 7.57 to finish first in the event finals. Junior Dione Thomas (Jacksonville, Fla.) also notched a personal-best time of 7.61 in the 60-meter dash. Chin broke her own school record in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 8.62. She previously held the school record in that event with a time of 8.67 set in the Frank Sevigne Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., earlier in the month.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert, the Knights have broken 12 school indoor records so far this season. Several athletes have broken their own school records several times over. Three Knights won their respective events on Saturday.
"We had some great performances today," Smith Gilbert said. "Feyisara broke a long-awaited school record in the 60 meters and Victoria Chin also broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles. We had a good performance by our throwers today - Virginia Traynor won the weight throw and Jessica Francis had another three-foot PR. All of the 3,000-meter runners set PRs as well. It was a great day for UCF track and field and this is just where we want to be in time for the conference meet next weekend."
UCF's throwers recorded a strong day as senior Virginia Traynor (Miami, Fla.) charted a personal-best mark to finish first in the weight throw with a toss of 52-5. Sophomore Jessica Francis (Orlando, Fla.), who last week recorded a seven-foot PR in the weight throw, followed up that performance with a three-foot PR on Saturday, finishing with a toss of 50-6. Freshman Christina Raphael (Miami, Fla.) notched a collegiate best in the event with a throw of 38-0.
Each of the six Knights who participated in the 3,000-meter run all recorded personal-best times in the event. Senior Elizabeth Miller (Orlando, Fla.) finished third in the 3,000 in a time of 10:34.61, while freshman Ocean Cohen (Sarasota, Fla.) followed in fourth place in a time of 10:38.79. UCF's top five runners in the event finished within 16 seconds of one another.
Thomas just narrowly missed breaking her own school record in the triple jump. Thomas won the triple jump with a leap of 41-4.25, which is just shy of her school record of 41-4.50.
UCF returns to action Feb. 29-March 1, when it travels to Houston, Texas to participate in the Conference USA Championships. The two-day event will be held at the Yeoman Field House, hosted by the University of Houston.
