DeLand, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Ashleigh Cole (Pace, Fla.) pitched a two-hit complete game shutout to lead the UCF softball team to a 6-0 win over in-state rival Stetson Wednesday night at Patricia Wilson Field. The sophomore had six strikeouts and did not allow a walk on her way to her first victory of the year.
Breanne Javier (Castaic, Calif.) and Marquita Council (Orlando, Fla.) led the Knights at the plate with two hits apiece. With a single in the first inning, Javier extended her hitting streak to eight games and posted her sixth multiple hit game of the season.
Hillary Barrow (Miami, Fla.) also had a productive day with the bat, knocking in three of the Knights' six runs.
UCF jumped on the Hatters early, getting three-straight singles from the top of the order load to load the bases, setting up a sacrifice fly to left field by Barrow. A single by Brittany Hipple (Venice, Fla.) loaded the bases and a single to the fence from Lindsay Dean (Jacksonville, Fla.) brought in two runs to put UCF up, 3-0, with only one out. Cole's RBI single through the right side extended the Knights' lead to four going into the home half of the first inning. The Black and Gold tallied six hits in the inning, with every batter in the lineup coming to the plate at least once.
The UCF bats lost some steam after the first inning, but gained momentum again in the seventh inning. Council and Javier led off the inning with a pair of singles, before Barrow hit a line-drive double to left center field to score both runs, giving the Knights a 6-0 advantage after six and a half innings.
The Knights conclude their nine-game road trip Thursday when they make the trip to Daytona Beach, Fla., to face Bethune-Cookman at 3:30 p.m.
