PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF junior David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla./Melbourne) tied for ninth in the individual standings as the Knights' men's golf team concluded play at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the Sawgrass Country Club on Tuesday. Johnson fired a one-under 71 in the final round to conclude the three-day, three-round event at 218 (+2).
As a team, UCF tied for 13th at the tournament, which featured 10 squads that are ranked in the top-30 nationally. The Knights, who are 23rd, recorded a team score of 901 (+37).
UCF carded its best team score of the event on Tuesday (295, +7).
Johnson was one of two Knights who were among the top-30 finishers. Sophomore Nuno Henriques (Funchal, Portugal) competed as an individual and tied for 25th with a 223 (+7).
Junior Preston Brown (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) tied for 38th (226, +10). On Tuesday, sophomore Mike Stern (Miami, Fla./Killian) carded a one-over 73. Stern finished tied for 56th at 229 (+13).
Also in action for the Knights were junior Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) and senior Chris Anderson (Lake Mary, Fla./Seminole). Forest (230, +14) tied for 59th and Anderson finished 76th with a 238 (+22).
The tournament was the first of the spring campaign for UCF.
No. 4 Alabama won the event with a team score of 873 (+9). The Crimson Tide were followed by No. 2 UCLA (877, +13). Joel Sjoholm of Georgia State took medalist honors (209, -7).
UCF finished tied with Vanderbilt in the team standings.
The Knights will return to action Monday, hosting the two-day Rio Pinar Invitational in Orlando.
