PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The 23rd-ranked UCF men's golf team began its 2008 spring campaign on Sunday, competing at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the Sawgrass Country Club. After 18 holes of play, the Knights are tied for 13th in the team standings.
Play at the three-day, three-round tournament will resume on Monday morning.
As a team, the Knights posted a 306 (+18) on Sunday. Two UCF players are in the top-40 in the individual standings as senior David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla./Melbourne) and sophomore Mike Stern (Miami, Fla./Killian) both carded rounds of three-over 75.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Nuno Henriques (Funchal, Portugal) recorded a one-over 73 and is one of seven players tied for 17th.
Junior Preston Brown (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) is tied for 49th at 77 (+5), while junior Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) is tied for 68th (79, +7). Senior Chris Anderson (Lake Mary, Fla./Seminole) carded an 82 (+10) and is tied for 75th.
Fourth-ranked Alabama leads the tournament as the Crimson Tide carded a 290 (+2) in the first round. No. 12 Tennessee (291, +3) is second, followed by No. 28 Pepperdine (294, +6).
The Knights were in action for the first time since October, when they wrapped up their fall campaign.
