CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF's women's tennis team was able to jump out to a 1-0 lead after doubles action, but No. 7 Miami bounced back to sweep singles play in a 6-1 Hurricane victory Saturday in Coral Gables. The Knights moved to 2-3 on the season while UM extended its record to 6-1.
Both teams split the first two doubles matches in the best-of-three format. Senior Anna Yakimchenkova and junior Kenza Belbacha slipped past Bianca Eichkorn and Caren Seenauth at No. 3, 8-6, before UM returned the favor as Laura Vallverdu and Romy Farah edged senior Kyla McNicol and freshman Jenny Frisell at No. 1, 8-5. However, UCF's No. 2 doubles combination of senior Jennifer Carati and junior Elvira Serrot sealed the day's first point by defeating Gina Sabatino and Michaela Kissell, 8-5.
For Carati and Serrot, it was their seventh doubles victory of the season and their third in dual-match competition.
Even though UCF claimed a 1-0 lead, Miami erased its deficit in singles, where the Hurricanes claimed all six matches for the overall win. Frisell and McNicol each came close to taking their respective opponents to three sets, but UM held on for the singles sweep.
For the fourth time this season, UCF faces another top-35 program as it visits No. 33 Florida International Sunday. First serve is slated for 11 a.m.
