ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF women's basketball team is proud to be a part of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's "Think Pink" initiative as it hosts its "Think Pink" game on Saturday at 5 p.m. EST vs. Memphis to raise breast cancer awareness.
The WBCA's "Think Pink" initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year of "Think Pink" a success.
More than 600 women's basketball teams across the country are participating in "Think Pink" week, which takes place Feb. 8-17. "Think Pink" works in conjunction with the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, which honors North Carolina State head basketball coach Kay Yow, who is currently battling the disease for the third time.
In addition, the Knights will be looking to pack the New UCF Arena and break the school's attendance record of 1,457 fans that was set last Saturday. Already this season, UCF has recorded four of the top 20 crowds in school history. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game to support the "Think Pink" initiative.
"We're excited about being a part of this great cause," UCF head coach Joi Williams said. "This is such a huge initiative by the WBCA to support breast cancer in light of Coach Kay Yow, who is probably the most prominent figure in women's basketball in this cause. I urge people in the community to come out and support this event because it's pretty much a known fact that everyone either knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer or has had someone in their family who has had it."
Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of death for all women, and the leading overall cause of cancer death in women between the ages of 20-59. In the United States, breast cancer is expected to be newly diagnosed every three minutes, and a woman will die from breast cancer every 13 minutes. The most common risk factors of breast cancer are sex, age, personal history and family history.
