ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - After the UCF women's tennis team took part in the Florida Gulf Coast MLK/Johan Kriek Classic Jan. 19-21, the Knights learned Friday that their doubles pair of senior Kyla McNicol and freshman Jenny Frisell earned enough points to be declared the event's doubles champion.
The point totals were not immediately known following the tournament, so McNicol and Frisell had to wait until Friday to see if their 13-point total held up.
"Kyla and Jenny played some great doubles last weekend," said head coach Stephanie Nickitas. "They showed a lot of improvement and were working well as a team. They have the ability to be an attacking team and need to continually put pressure on their opponents by closing into the net and using their serves as a strength."
McNicol and Frisell gained 13 points en route to going 4-0 during the tournament, which featured a dual-match format but did not count towards any of the teams' records. The pair opened the weekend at the No. 2 spot by edging Ohio State's Paloma Escobedo and Caitlin O'Keefe, 9-7, then bounced Miami's Jenna Osborne and Caren Seenauth, 8-6. McNicol and Frisell followed those wins with an 8-1 performance over Stetson's Natalie Gorham and Katherine Nowicki.
The doubles combination concluded the event by moving to the No. 1 position, where they defeated Dartmouth's Megan Zebroski and Molly Scott, 8-6, to secure a perfect 4-0 record.
The Knights return to the court Feb. 3 with a 9:30 a.m. showdown with FGCU at the UCF Tennis Complex.
