FT. MYERS, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Competing in an event that featured four nationally-ranked programs, the UCF women's tennis team wrapped up the Florida Gulf Coast MLK/Johan Kriek Classic with six more victories Monday afternoon. The Knights completed the tournament, which did not affect their overall record, with a combined 25-10 mark in singles and doubles.
"This was a very positive experience for us," said first-year head coach Stephanie Nickitas. "The girls had to deal with a lot of strange conditions with the weather and match times changing, but they handled it with a lot of maturity. They have definitely improved on the things we were working on in the fall. It was a really good start to the season and now we are looking forward to our first dual match on Thursday vs. Florida."
Senior Kyla McNicol went 7-0 during the event, notching three singles wins at either the No. 2 or No. 3 position and four doubles victories with partner freshman Jenny Frisell. Along with UCF, No. 11 Miami, No. 31 Florida International, No. 32 Wichita State, No. 52 Ohio State, Dartmouth, Stetson and host Florida Gulf Coast all participated in Ft. Myers.
With three doubles wins over Dartmouth, the Knights finished the weekend with an overall doubles record of 10-3. McNicol and Frisell came through with an 8-6 victory over Megan Zebroski and Molly Scott at No. 1, while senior Anna Yakimchenkova and junior Kenza Belbacha got past Mary Beth Winingham and Jesse Adler at No. 2, 8-4. Also picking up a win for the Black and Gold, senior Jennifer Carati and junior Elvira Serrot cruised past Maggie Suydam and Julia Zak at the No. 3 spot, 8-4.
Over in singles, the Black and Gold posted a 15-7 record for the tournament. McNicol ended her weekend by not dropping a set for the third-straight day, taking a 6-2, 6-4 win over FIU's Maria Dolores Pazo. Frisell also collected a victory against the Golden Panthers, defeating Priscilla Castillo, 7-5, 6-4.
Carati capped off a successful tournament for UCF, as she notched a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Jordan Vaughn of Florida Gulf Coast.
UCF returns to the courts with the opening of its dual-match season Thursday at No. 4 Florida at 5 p.m.
