Smith Garners Sporting News First Team All-America Honor

Dec. 7, 2007

Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF running back Kevin Smith was named to the Sporting News All-America First Team on Friday as officials from the long-time sports publication announced its annual team of the best players in college football. For Smith, the All-America honor is his third of the postseason after earning Walter Camp First Team All-America honors at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Thursday and Rivals.com second team accolades earlier last week.

Smith leads the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision in rushing yards with 2,448 and touchdowns with 30. The Miami native's season total is second all time on the FBS single-season list behind Oklahoma State's Barry Sanders, who set the mark of 2,628 yards when he won the Heisman Trophy in 1989. Smith and Sanders are the only two running backs in FBS history to rush for 2,000-plus yards and score 30 touchdowns in the same season.

Joining Smith as a running back on the first team was Arkansas' Darren McFadden.

The Knights, who reached 10 wins in a season for the just the second time in program history with their victory over Tulsa in the Bright House Networks Conference USA Championship Game, will finish the 2007 campaign on Dec. 29 in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl vs. Mississippi State. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. ET and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
