Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF running back Kevin Smith was named a Walter Camp First Team All-American at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show at Disney World Thursday evening. Smith became the first Knight to earn first-team All-America honors since Daunte Culpepper in 1998.
The Miami native currently leads the nation with 188.31 rushing yards per game and 13.9 points per contest. Smith's 2,448 yards rank second in Football Bowl Subdivision single-season history, while he broke the all-time mark for carries in a season when he stretched his total to 415 in a 44-25 win over Tulsa in the Conference USA Championship Dec. 1.
Smith already has been named the C-USA Co-Offensive Player of the Year, a C-USA Offensive Player of the Week on four occasions in 2007 and he was the AT&T All-America National Player of the Week following his 320-yard performance at UAB Nov. 10.
UCF's all-time leading rusher has racked up 29 touchdowns on the ground and 30 overall for the Knights, as he stands at No. 1 in the country with 12 100-yard rushing games this year.
Smith also holds the state of Florida career rushing record with 4,560 yards in just three seasons with UCF.
With its victory in the C-USA Championship Game, UCF earned an invitation to the Liberty Bowl. The Knights will meet Mississippi State on Dec. 29 in Memphis, Tenn.
UCF will be playing in the postseason for just the second time.
The Walter Camp Football Foundation was founded in 1967 to continue the work started by area native Walter Camp of selecting and honoring the outstanding college football talent playing the game across America. Mr. Camp selected his first All-America team in 1889.
Today, the WCFF is an all volunteer organization that operates year round working towards the following purposes: 1) Oversee the selection of the current year's entries into the oldest college All-America Football Team; and to honor those selections 2) select and honor other individuals who have distinguished themselves 3) Raise money for charitable purposes.
