UCF Football Records Highest In-Season Team GPA

Dec. 19, 2007

ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The success by the UCF football team on the gridiron, which led to the 2007 Conference USA Championship, is not the only achievement the squad is taking pride in of late. The Knights also turned in a successful effort in the classroom, as the squad registered its highest in-season team grade-point average in program history of 2.753.

The team's 2.753 fall semester GPA brought the cumulative GPA of the Knights on the football roster to 2.838, which is the highest it has ever been.

"I am proud of not only our success on the field this season, but our continued academic success off the field," fourth-year head coach George O'Leary said. "Our kids take a lot of pride in their academic success and their hard work is showing."

In all, a total of 44 student-athletes recorded a GPA of at least a 3.0. The Black and Gold had seven current or former players graduate following the fall semester: Dominic Ignelzi, Sergio Joachim, Kyle Smith, Michael Torres, Kenny Jackson, Sheldon Shakespeare and Marlon Williams.

With classes currently not in session, the Knights are on the practice fields getting ready for their trip to Memphis. Kickoff for the Knights' second bowl game in program history is set for 4:30 p.m. ET and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN.

Limited tickets remain available for the 49th-annual AutoZone Liberty Bowl contest. Fans can call 407-823-1000 for more information on the remaining tickets.
