Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Emma Cannon (Rochester, N.Y.) scored 22 points for the UCF women's basketball team, but the Knights dropped a 82-73 decision to Rollins College in an exhibition game at the new UCF Arena Sunday afternoon. The freshman also had seven rebounds for the Black and Gold.
The contest was the first for the Knights inside the new UCF Arena. The game also served as the first for UCF head coach Joi Williams, who joined the Knights in the spring.
Rollins went 24-7 last year and played in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the fourth-straight season.
Tia Lewis (Poulan, Ga.) had a team-high 11 rebounds and nine points for UCF, while Jelisa Caldwell (Macon, Ga.) added 14 points, six rebounds and two steals.
UCF shot 46.8% (29-for-62) in the contest and held a 40-31 advantage on the boards.
The Knights trailed the Tars for most of the first half, but a layup by Jackie Akers (Naples, Fla.) with 2:11 left tied the game 38-38. A layup and free throw by Cannon with two seconds remaining put UCF up 43-40 going into the locker room.
Rollins opened the second half with a 15-6 run and shot 53.3% in the final half.
The Tars were led by Jennifer Musgrove's 24 points and nine rebounds. As a team, the Tars shot 50% (32-for-64) from the floor and had five blocked shots.
The Knights open their regular-season schedule Nov. 9 and Nov. 11, when they host the UCF Knights Classic at the new UCF Arena. UCF opens the tournament Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Texas Tech and concludes the event Sunday, facing Coppin State at 4:30 p.m.
