TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Playing against top-notch talent at the Seminole Invitational, members of the UCF men's tennis team posted several impressive showings over the weekend. Senior Sinan Sudas (Adana, Turkey) and freshman Blaze Schwartz (Pensacola, Fla./Washington) claimed the `B' Division doubles title.
The pair topped Auburn's Lukas Marsoun and Nick Maurillo, 8-5 to win the title. In the semifinals, the Auburn team defeated Florida State's Chris Cloer and Bobby Deye, one of the better tandems in the southeast.
The doubles draw win marked UCF's first title at the event.
Sudas won three-straight matches in the `B' Division of singles play to reach the final four of the bracket.
Sudas defeated Florida A&M's Paul Paige, 6-0, 6-1. The senior then went on to knock off Drake Bernstein of Georgia in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Sudas won his third-straight match against Radek Pivonka of South Carolina State, 6-2, 7-6. In a 6-4, 6-4 decision, Sudas fell to South Alabama's R.J. Nagel.
Sophomore Johan Beigart (Vaxjo, Sweden) lost to Florida State's Sam Chang, 6-4, 6-1 in the first round of the `A' Division. Beigart defeated Chang in the `A' Division Consolation bracket, but had to default to Mississippi's Bam Ten Berge in his next match following an illness.
In the `B' Division, junior Brock Sakey (Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze) knocked off Auburn's Hunter Mills, 6-2, 6-1. The Gulf Breeze native then defeated Mercer's Tobias Ohrstrom, 7-6(0), 6-2. In the third of five rounds, Sakey fell to Auburn's Marsoun, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.
Schwartz won his first match against Jacksonville's Jordie Ballester, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Ballester is the No. 1 player for the Dolphins.
In Schwartz's second match against Florida's Eric Corace, the freshman fell 6-4, 6-1.
Sakey and Beigart lost in doubles to Miami's David Rosenfeld and Vivek Subramanian, 8-3. Miami's duo lost in the doubles championship against Florida State's Yves Aubone and Clint Bowles.
Juniors Jimmy Roesch (Melbourne, Fla./Eau Gallie) and Danny Colon (Jacksonville, Fla./Englewood) finished play at the Florida Southern College Fall Invitational on Sunday as well.
In the round of 32, Roesch defeated Ray Duyungan in the men's open singles bracket, 6-2, 6-1. Roesch lost his second match to fourth-seeded Erik Turnquist, 6-3, 6-2.
In his first singles match, Colon defeated Nathan Walker, 6-0, 6-1. In his next match, the Jacksonville native dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Richard Bonfiglio in the round of 16.
In their first doubles match, Roesch and Colon defeated C.J. Johnson and Max Kjellin, 6-3, 6-2. The Black and Gold duo then knocked off Michael Basile and Kyle Maloof, 6-2, 7-6. In three sets, Roesch and Colon lost in the semifinals to Joel Helm and Brock Newton, 6-4, 6-7, 10-2.
