ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF rowing head coach Leeanne Crain was pleased to announce Friday that her program has signed three recruits to National Letters of Intent. Christina Bechtold (Somers Point, N.J.), Alyssa Egan (Roswell, Ga.) and Chelsey Lauzon (Rockford, Mich.) all will suit up in the Black and Gold beginning with the 2008-09 season.
"We are very excited about signing these three individuals, all of whom were recruited by top programs around the nation," said Crain, who is entering her fifth season with the Knights. "Christina Bechtold and Chelsey Lauzon will bring size and speed to our openweight team, and Alyssa Eagan should make an immediate impact with our lightweight squad."
Bechtold currently attends Mainland Regional High School, and brings numerous accolades to Orlando. This year alone, she helped her team finish first at the Philadelphia City Championships, the Atlantic County Championships, the New Jersey State Championships and the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in the Junior 8+. Bechtold also was a part of the third-place boat at the 2007 Scholastic Rowing Association National Championship in the Junior 8+.
Egan serves as the team co-captain for the Atlanta Junior Rowing Association, and rowed second seat in the Women's Youth 8+ at the 2007 USRowing Youth National Championships. Meanwhile, she lifted her squad to second place at the 2007 Head of the Hooch in the Youth 8+ and the Youth 4+. Egan is attending Roswell High School for her senior year.
Lauzon has been a huge part of the Rockford High School crew program, and helped guide the team to a first-place finish out of 76 rowers at the 2007 Grand Rapids Winter Sprints. She also earned fourth at the 2007 Midwest Scholastic Championships in the Varsity 4+. At the 2007 Culver Regatta, Lauzon took first in the Varsity Double and the Varsity 4+ and third in the Varsity 8+.
This year's UCF rowing program returns to the water March 1 for the Rollins College Metro Cup.
