Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - After securing a 68-57 win over La Salle Sunday afternoon, the UCF women's basketball team gears up for a contest against in-state rival Bethune-Cookman Wednesday evening at the new UCF Arena. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 5 p.m. with the UCF men's game versus Presbyterian to follow.
UCF and Bethune-Cookman can make the argument that they have one of the youngest teams in the country. Both squads carry nine freshmen on their rosters and have a freshman leading their teams in scoring in the Knights' Tia Lewis (Poulan, Ga.) and the Wildcats' Demetria Frank. But, the Knights have started four freshmen and a redshirt freshman in all six games this season, while the Wildcats have mixed a foursome of upperclassmen into their starting line-ups.
Lewis is averaging 15.2 points and 11.7 rebounds per game for the Black and Gold, while fellow freshman Emma Cannon (Rochester, N.Y.) has a 14.2-point and 10.0-rebound per game average, making UCF the only team in Conference USA to sport two players averaging double-doubles. Both players have four double-doubles on the season, tying them for first place in the league with Southern Miss' Pauline Love.
The Wildcats come to Orlando with a 4-1 record, which includes four-straight losses on the road. BCU suffered losses to South Florida, Stetson, Jacksonville and North Florida on a four-game road swing to open the season, before notching its first win against Charleston Southern at home on Saturday. Demetria Frank had been the Wildcats' biggest scoring threat in 2007-08, averaging 10.6 points per game and also leads her team with 15 steals.
Wednesday's contest marks the 15th between UCF and Bethune-Cookman, with the Knights holding a 10-4 advantage over the Wildcats.
