Jacksonville, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Tia Lewis had 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead the UCF women's basketball team to a 57-47 win over North Florida at the UNF Arena Thursday night. After trailing 27-21 at the half, the Black and Gold used a 36-point second half to record its first victory of the season.
The Knights improve to 1-2 on the season with the win, while the Ospreys fall to 0-2.
Emma Cannon also had a double-double for the Black and Gold with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Defensively, Jelisa Caldwell recorded a team-high three steals for the Knights, and Lewis, Cannon and Angelica Mealing all registered a block apiece.
The Black and Gold dominated the boards for the second-straight game, grabbing a season-high 50 rebounds, which equaled 17 more than North Florida's 33.
The Black and Gold opened the second period down by six points, but went on a 23-7 run, capped off by 11 unanswered points to go up 44-34 with 5:37 left in the game.
Lewis and Cannon accounted for 20 points and 20 rebounds, combined, for the Knights in the second half, with the duo, along with Angelica Mealing, playing all 20 minutes of the final period.
The Knights out-shot North Florida 46.2% to 24.2% from the floor in the second half, while also shooting 40% from the three-point line in the half.
UCF shot 28% from the floor in the first half compared to 41.7% by the Ospreys. Cannon and Lewis led the Black and Gold scoring in the opening period, recording six points apiece.
UCF won the war on the glass in the first, 21-16, with Lewis pulling down five.
The Knights return home to host Jacksonville at the new UCF Arena Monday, with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
