Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF women's basketball team hits the road for the first time this season when they travel to Jacksonville Thursday for an in-state match-up with North Florida at the UNF Arena. Tip-off for the contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. The contest will be featured live on ASUN.TV to fans that purchase an event pass at www.asun.tv.
The Knights (0-2) and the Ospreys will meet for only the second time Thursday, with UCF holding the 1-0 advantage. UCF defeated UNF, 55-44, at the UCF Holiday Classic on Dec. 18, 2006.
In her collegiate debut against Big 12 powerhouse Texas Tech, Tia Lewis (Poulan, Ga.) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Knights, both were team-highs. She followed up her performance with an eight-point, eight-rebound showing against Coppin State, a team that was picked to finish first in the MEAC. The freshman totaled 22 points and 19 rebounds at the UCF Knights Classic, averaging 11 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Lewis also averaged 36.5 minutes per game, playing 37 minutes against Texas Tech, which included playing all 20 minutes of the first half.
Marshay White (Rochester, N.Y.) and Angelica Mealing (Decatur, Ga.) both posted 17 points in the Knights' loss to Coppin State, with the duo complimenting each other well. White scored 11 of her 17 points in the opening period, which included three three-pointers, two of which came during a 9-5 run for the Black and Gold. Mealing scored 12 of her 17 points in the second half, which included two three-pointers, four rebounds and two assists.
The Ospreys finished the 2006-07 season with an 8-21 overall record, with seven of those victories coming in Atlantic Sun Conference action. UNF's 7-11 league clip was good for a seventh place finish. The Ospreys return four starters and four letterwinners from last season, while welcoming six freshmen and a redshirt freshman to their 2007-08 squad.
In UNF's last outing, sophomore Tiffany Williams scored a team-high 14 points, while Jennifer Guldager grabbed seven rebounds in its, 75-48, opening-day loss to Florida State on Nov. 11 at the Tucker Center in Tallahassee, Fla.
