ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Winter Springs native Yvonne George was named the Conference USA Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week Monday for her performance during UCF's two shutout victories last weekend. The sophomore tallied both of the Knights' game-winners to help her team improve to 7-2-2 on the year and 2-0-0 in league play.
The accolade was George's second of the season, while it was the fifth time this year that the league office has handed out a weekly award to the Knights.
In the C-USA opener for the Black and Gold, George put UCF on the board vs. Marshall Oct. 5 13 minutes into the match when she picked up her own rebound and blasted a shot past goalkeeper Liz Orton. That was all the Knights would need as they went on to defeat the Thundering Herd, 4-0.
To close the weekend, UCF was heading for a 0-0 draw vs. East Carolina Oct. 7. However, George provided a huge spark in the second overtime. After her first two chances were denied earlier in the frame, she returned with 58 seconds remaining when she received a perfect pass from sophomore Courtney Whidden in the box and fired the deciding goal into the lower left corner.
George's efforts allowed UCF to stay undefeated at home at 5-0-2. She now has five goals on the season, three of which are game-winners. George and the Knights will now hit the road when they travel to Tulsa Friday and SMU Sunday. The showdown with the Mustangs will be televised on a tape-delay basis by CSTV, and can be seen Oct. 16 at 8 p.m.
